The Afro-Romance Institute and the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures are pleased to announce the publication of Donato Ndongo-Bidyogo’s newest novel El metro and his first English translation Shadows of Your Black Memory (Michael Ugarte, translator). The guest speaker will be Professor Benita Sampedro (Hofstra University) who will speak on "The Shadows of History and the Amorphous Globality: Migrants from the South."

In April 2006, the Afro-Romance Theatre and Culture international conference was held at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

The Afro-Romance Theater and Culture Conference, April 6-7, brought playwrights Adriana Genta (Uruguay), Rafael Selva Murillo (Honduras), Rosa María Britton (Panamá), Pedro Perez Sarduy (Cuba/England), Staley Péan (Haiti/Canada), and Donato Ndongo from Equatorial Guinea, who was Writer in Residence in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, University of Missouri-Columbia, for 2005-2006. Scholars from around the country attended and delivered papers on Afro-Romance theatre and literature.
